Thursdays June 10th & 17th
6.30pm to 8.30pm
Dance Studio, Toi Poneke Arts Centre, 69 Abel Smith Street
$20 per class
Global Underscore on June 20th $15
In these classes, dancers will become familiar and practiced with dancing the Underscore, a long form dance improvisation structure created by Nancy Stark Smith, in preparation for the Global Underscore on June 20th (NZ).
For the Global Underscore event dancers need to be confident with the Underscore and to have attended at least two classes prior to dancing the Underscore if it is new to them.
Dancers will also have the opportunity to practice specific aspects of the Underscore and to deepen their technical and compositional skills of Contact Improvisation within a broader framework of dance improvisation.
The Global Underscore event will take place on Sunday June 20th from 4pm to 7pm in the Dance Studio, Toi Poneke.
Juliet’s study of the Underscore began in 2000 when she undertook a three-week CI intensive with Nancy Stark Smith at Earthdance in the USA. In 2012 she was invited to participate in eight days of an Extended Underscore Workgroup with Nancy Stark Smith, Mike Vargas and 28 international dancers in London at Roehampton University.
The Underscore is a long-form dance improvisation structure developed by Nancy Stark Smith (1952 – 2020)
It has been evolving since 1990 and is practiced all over the globe.
The Underscore is a vehicle for incorporating Contact Improvisation into a broader arena of improvisational dance practice; for developing greater ease dancing in spherical space—alone and with others; and for integrating kinaesthetic and compositional concerns while improvising.
It allows for a full spectrum of energetic and physical expressions, embodying a range of forms and changing states.
The practice—usually 3 to 4 hours in length—progresses through a broad range of dynamic states, including long periods of very small, private, and quiet internal activity and other times of higher energy and interactive dancing.
